WARM WELCOME. >> SO NEIL, THIS IS DRIVING ME A LITTLE CRAZY, BUT ON MONDAY, NASA IS GOING TO -- >> WHOOPI, I LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE WITH THE SET. I LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. >> OH, THIS LITTLE THING? YOU KNOW, EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A LITTLE SPACEY, STARRY JUST FOR YOU. >> IT'S A BEAUTIFUL THING. >> WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS CRAZINESS WITH NASA ATTEMPTING FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME TRYING TO THROW OFF AN ASTEROID, THROW IT OFF ITS COURSE? BECAUSE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE CRASHING INTO STUFF. IT'S DARK SPACE CRAP. WHAT THE -- WHAT IS HAPPENING? WHY DON'T THEY LEAVE IT ALONE AND LET I GO WERE IT'S GOING? IS IT COMING HERE? >> ALL RIGHT. OKAY, NO, IT'S NOT COMING HERE. >> WHY ARE THEY MESSING WITH IT? >> THE DOUBLE ASTEROID REDIRECT TEST, WHICH ACRONYMS AS DART IS SOMETHING WE SHOULD HAVE TESTED DECADES AGO, AND IT'S AN ATTEMPT TO SEE IF WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY, THE ENGINEERING, THE POWER TO CHANGE THE ORBIT OF AN ASTEROID THAT'S OUT THERE IN SPACE. BECAUSE ONE DAY YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO THAT IF YOU FIND ONE HEADED TOWARDS EARTH. SO THIS IS A SAFE, DOUBLE ASTEROID. THERE'S A LITTLE MOONLIT AROUND IT, AND WE'RE GOING TO BUMP INTO THAT, AND SEE IF WE CAN MEASURE A CHANGE IN ITS ORBIT AROUND THE HOST ASTEROID, AND IF THAT WORKS, THAT'S A START. IT'S THE NEXT ONE THAT HAS OUR NAME ON IT, AND WE DON'T WANT TO GO EXTINCT LIKE THE DINOSAURS BECAUSE IF THEY HAD NASA, THEY WOULD STILL BE ON EARTH TODAY. >> THIS IS TRUE, BUT -- BUT -- HOW MANY TIMES ARE WE GOING TO TEST THIS THING? BECAUSE WHAT IF IT DOESN'T WORK QUITE THE WAY THEY THINK IT SHOULD? >> WELL, YOU'RE WORRIED THAT THEY MIGHT MAKE A MISTAKE AND HAVE IT HEAD TOWARDS EARTH, RIGHT? THAT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. THAT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. THIS ASTEROID IS SAFELY ORBITING IN A WAY THAT DOES NOT CROSS EARTH'S ORBIT. EVEN IF IT MESSES UP, IT'LL STILL BE IN A PLACE WHERE IT'S NOT CROSSING EARTH'S ORBIT. >> UH-HUH. OKAY. >> WE GOT YOU. >> SO IT'S BEEN 50 YEARS SINCE THE -- SINCE MAN LAST STEP FOOT ON THE MOON IN 1972. NOW NASA'S ON TRACK TO SEND HUMANS BACK THERE BY 2025, AND IS PLANNING TO SET UP A WHY NOW, AND HOW CLOSE ARE WE TO REALLY POTENTIALLY HAVING PEOPLE LIVE ON THE MOON? >> WE WENT TO THE MOON IN THE FIRST CASE AND OUR MEMORY SAYS, OH, WE'RE EXPLORERS AND AMERICANS. WE WERE SCARED WITLESS BECAUSE THE GODLESS COMMUNIST RUSSIANS WERE THREATENING TO GET TO NEW HIGH GROUND. THEY HAD THE FIRST SATELLITE, THE FIRST PERSON IN ORBIT. SO THEY WERE BEATING US BADLY, AND SO THAT WAS THE REACTION. NO MATTER WHAT STIRRING SPEECHES YOU CAN DIG UP FROM PRESIDENT KENNEDY. WHY ARE WE GOING BACK TO THE MOON NOW? I'VE CHECKED THE NEWS IN THE LAST THREE YEARS, AND YOU KNOW WHAT'S THERE? CHINA SAYS THEY WANT TO GO TO THE MOON. THERE'S ANOTHER GEOPOLITICAL FORCE OPERATING TODAY JUST THE WAY WE HAD 50 YEARS AGO. >> I HAVE NO DESIRE TO GO TO THE MOON. I'M WORRIED ABOUT THE PLANET WE'RE IN BECAUSE AFTER ONE OF THE HOTTEST SUMMERS ON RECORD IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE, IT'S CLIMATE WEEK HERE IN NEW YORK CITY, AND THE OUTLOOK IS GRIM. A REPORT FROM THE U.N. SAYS THAT DESPITE SOME PROGRESS, THE WORLD IS NOT ON TRACK TO LIMIT GLOBAL WARMING TO LESS THAN 2 DEGREES. SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR ALL OF US EXACTLY BESIDES THAT WE'LL HAVE TO GO TO ANOTHER PLANET? >> YEAH. WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE. I JUST WANT TO BE CLEAR. IT SOUNDS LIKE TWO DEGREES, YOU KNOW, WHAT IS THAT? TEMPERATURE VARIES BY TWO DEGREES WITHIN YOUR HOME, BUT IN THE DAYTIME BETWEEN NIGHTTIME, TEMPERATURE VARIES OFTEN. THAT'S NOT WHAT MATTERS HERE. WHAT MATTERS IS THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF THE EARTH, AND WHEN THAT SHIFTS EVEN BY A TINY AMOUNT, WHAT MATTERS IS NOT WHERE IT IS IN THE MIDDLE. WHAT MATTERS IS THE EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS AT THE EDGES. THAT'S WHERE YOU GET THE DEVASTATING STORMS AND BY THE WAY, DO YOU REALIZE IF THERE WAS AN EIGHT-DEGREE SHIFT, WE WOULD INITIATE A NEW ICE AGE. >> YEAH. >> OH. >> THESE FEW DEGREE SHIFTS ARE CRUCIAL TO THE SYSTEM THAT IS THE EARTH, AND THAT'S WHY WE NEED TO PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION. >> IS IT TOO LATE? IS IT TOO LATE? >> IT'S NOT TOO LATE. >> WE'RE NOT GOING TO EXTINCT FROM THIS, BUT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO BE PICKING UP CITIES AND MOVING THEM INLAND, YES, WHICH IS NOT SOMETHING ANYBODY WANTS TO DO. >> YEAH. >> IF WE LOSE -- IF WE LOSE THE ICECAPS FROM GREENLAND AND IN ANTARCTICA, THE SEA LEVELS WILL RISE AND REACH THE LEVEL OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY'S LEFT ELBOW. >> YEAH. >> SO PUT THAT IN THERE. THINK ABOUT THAT ONE. >> THERE YOU GO. >> ONTO A BRIGHTER TOPIC -- >> THANK YOU. >> IN YOUR NEW BOOK, "STARRY MESSENGER: COSMIC PERSPECTIVES ON CIVILIZATION," YOU WRITE THAT THINKING LIKE A SCIENTIST CAN HELP RESOLVE EVERYTHING FROM GLOBAL CONFLICT TO THORNY POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ISSUES HERE AT HOME. CAN YOU TELL US WHAT YOU MEAN BY THAT? >> YEAH. WHEN I SAY RESOLVE IT, I DON'T MEAN, LIKE, LET'S AGREE TO DISAGREE. WELL, LET'S COMPROMISE. NO. I'M SAYING WHEN YOU HAVE A SCIENTIFIC OUTLOOK, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S MIXED WITH A COSMIC PERSPECTIVE, OFTEN THE ARGUMENTS YOU THOUGHT WERE PROPERLY FORMULATED AND DEEPLY HELD, IT MEANT THEY'LL EVAPORATE IN MANY CASES, AND IT COULD BE THAT THERE'S ANOTHER PLACE TO STAND, ANOTHER VISTA WHERE YOU LOOK BACK ON THE ARGUMENT AND YOU SAY, THERE WASN'T REALLY AN ARGUMENT THERE AT ALL, AND THIS SHOWS UP IN ALL MANNER OF OCCASION, ESPECIALLY AT THE THANKSGIVING DINNER TABLE, RIGHT? WHERE YOU KNOW THAT IS A HOTBED OF ALL THE ARGUMENTS THAT ALL COMES OUT. I'LL GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE. IT'S A WAY TO KEEP YOU HONEST IN YOUR OPINIONS. SO IF THERE'S A VEGETARIAN -- ONE OF THE CHAPTERS IS MEAT EATERS AND VEGETARIANS. I WENT THERE. SO IF YOU ARE A VEGETARIAN AND YOU CHOOSE NOT TO KILL ANIMALS, THAT'S NOBLE. I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT. YOU MIGHT EVEN HAVE A HUMANE MOUSE TRAP IN YOUR BASEMENT AND YOU GO DOWN AND SAVE THE MOUSE AND RELEASE IT BACK INTO THE WILD WHERE IT IS GUARANTEED TO BE EATEN BY AN OWL OR ALL MANNER OF WOODLAND PREDATORS LONG BEFORE ITS DUE DATE, LONG BEFORE IT EVER WOULD HAVE DIED HAD YOU JUST LEFT IT IN YOUR BASEMENT. SO HERE YOU ARE THINKING YOU'RE SAVING THE LIVE OF A MOUSE. IN THE WILD, IT LIVES 9 TO 18 MONTHS. IN YOUR BASEMENT, IT'LL LIVE SIX YEARS. >> YOU DON'T WANT IT IN YOUR BASEMENT FOR SIX YEARS. YOU DON'T WANT IT IN YOUR BASEMENT THOUGH. >> IF YOU ARE A GOOD PERSON, YOU LET THE MOUSE LIVE. >> WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH BEING A VEGETARIAN? >> IT HAS TO DO WITH -- I'LL GIVE YOU ANOTHER QUICK ONE. >> NO. >> A UFO? >> IMAGINE -- BY THE WAY, I INVITE ALIENS TO COMMENT ON OUR MYSTERIOUS WAYS, AND IN ONE OF THEM I IMAGINE SENTIENT PLANT-BASED ALIENS. THEY ARE SENTIENT PLANTS. >> NEIL. >> THEY CAN SOAK UP THE SUNLIGHT. >> I GOT TO GO. "STARRY MESSENGER" IS AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW WHEREVER BOOKS ARE SOLD, AND EVERYBODY IN THIS AUDIENCE, EVER
