- This morning, another close call between two planes is under investigation. The FAA says a Republic Airways flight crossed the wrong runway at Reagan National Airport after a United flight had been cleared to take off from that same runway. Air traffic control is heard alerting the United pilot. - United 2003, cancel takeoff clearance. - Aborting takeoff. Aborting takeoff. - That makes at least seven close calls this year alone, including one at New York's JFK Airport, where a Delta pilot had to slam on the brakes after an American Airlines plane crossed the wrong runway. All right there, and whew! - Some analysts say these cases show the industry can't keep up with the post-pandemic travel boom. Staffing will be one issue of discussion at the FAA safety summit today being attended by leaders across the industry. - How concerned are you? - I'm very concerned. We watch these things very closely. If you look at the last decade or so, you would see between 10 and 20 times a year typically that this would happen. This year, we're on track to have more than 20. And even one is one that I would not like to see happen. - The head of the FAA says today's summit is focusing on warning signs and how to make things safer.
