Transcript for Body camera footage released in fatal police shooting of activist Najee Seabrooks
- EMS is in route. How is he doing? - Hold on. He's all right, but he just wanted to wait. He want y'all to get here. - OK. That's fine. - Cause he's hallucinating-- - I'm here. I'm here. - --he's scared. SONIA RINCON: Hallucinating and scared is how family members describe Najee Seabrooks' state of mind as the first officers arrived to a family relieved to see them, because Seabrooks wouldn't leave the bathroom. And he himself made the 911 call. The officers try to reason with him. OFFICER: Now we're here for your well-being, to make sure that you're OK. SONIA RINCON: An EMT offers medical help. EMT: Do you want to go to the hospital to go get help? SONIA RINCON: Even his mother pleads with him. MOTHER (CRYING): Najee, stop this! I am your mother! Open the door! SONIA RINCON: As the hours go by, and he tells them he has a loaded gun, Seabrooks calls 911 several more times. - Who is the person that is holding you there? - Uh, Paterson cops. They're keeping me here. - Paterson police have you in the bathroom? - Yes. SONIA RINCON: At one point, he cuts himself with a knife and leaves water running, flooding the floor. He opens the door, showing a knife and appearing injured. OFFICER: Let's put the knives on the floor, dude. SONIA RINCON: In the more than four hours since the initial call, more officers arrive with guns drawn and larger rifles. They say they saw him lunge at them with a knife. [GUNSHOTS] SONIA RINCON: Najee Seabrooks was a 31-year-old anti-gun violence activist. His friends and supporters have demanded answers about why he had to die this way. And the mayor of Paterson has acknowledged that more mental health resources are needed. Until now law enforcement has released very little in the last two weeks about what happened March 3rd. The hours of video released today may answer some questions but may also raise others about how a mental health crisis like this should be handled. The attorney general's office says the investigation is not over. Sonia Rincon, channel 7 Eyewitness News.
