SONIA RINCON: They were five children and teens ranging in age from 8 to 17, according to the Westchester County Police. They believe a 16-year-old boy was driving the Nissan Rogue that veered off the Hutchinson River Parkway northbound around 20 minutes after midnight, crashing into a tree and bursting into flames. A sixth person, a nine-year-old boy, survived. The child had been riding in the trunk and was able to escape. A family member tells Eyewitness News, all the occupants of the vehicle were related. They were siblings and cousins and were on their way home to Derby, Connecticut from a mall. That heartbroken family member tells us, police said it appeared that the 16-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel. The nine-year-old was taken here to the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. Police say, his injuries are non-life-threatening. As police continue investigating, they have not released the names of the victims, nor have they yet addressed the question of whether the 16-year-old driver had a permit or a license. Laws vary by state. But under no circumstances would a 16-year-old driver in New York or Connecticut be allowed to drive at that hour without a 21-year-old adult licensed driver. The family has not released any additional details about the circumstances, asking for space to grieve and process an unimaginable loss.
