REPORTER: Zooey Zephyr will be Montana's first transgender legislator after being elected State Representative this month. Zephyr is one of more than 300 LGBTQ candidates to be elected across the country according to the Victory Fund. In her first few days as Representative Elect, Zephyr says she has seen the difference she's making.
- Some folks who clearly had questions and trepidations, but we were able to hold very pleasant conversations, and stay in touch, and build the kind of rapport that I believe over time helps people understand what it's like to be a trans person in America today.
REPORTER: Zephyr says her win proves that attempts to vilify LGBTQ people isn't a winning strategy. However, she says the recent shooting at an LGBTQ bar in Colorado, along with other attacks have concerned her.
