- The news breaking overnight, the US firing air strikes into Syria, retaliating for a deadly drone attack that killed an American contractor and injured six others. ABC News Chief Global Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz has the latest. Good morning, Martha.
- Good morning, Michael. This morning, retaliation. The US launching airstrikes targeting Iranian-backed groups in Syria who they say are responsible for a series of attacks against American forces. This latest, a drone strike on a maintenance facility in Northeast Syria, leaving that American contractor dead, another one injured, along with five American service members wounded.
There are some 900 American forces in Syria as part of a counter-ISIS force. They include Special Operations Forces, active duty, National Guard, and those contractors who are a vital part of the mission. But they're under constant threat. Since early 2021, they have been targeted 78 times by drones and rockets by these proxy groups. And sadly, this latest claiming the life of the American, Michael.
- Yeah, unfortunately, Martha. And Martha, we're gonna turn to North Korea. They're claiming they've tested an underwater attack drone that they say could create a radioactive tsunami.
- Exactly, Michael. The North Koreans have been constantly testing weapons and US resolve. This latest, they say, is a nuclear capable underwater attack drone, they claim, can cause a nuclear tsunami to, say, destroy enemy naval strike groups. Experts are a little skeptical at this point. But what is clear is that it is in response to US-South Korean joint military exercises, Michael.
- All right, Martha Raddatz, thank you, as always, for your reporting.
