Transcript for Family reunites with missing daughter after 51 years
- Melissa Highsmith never even knew that she had been kidnapped. But 51 years later, she has finally been reunited with her birth parents. In 1971, Melissa's mom was working as a waitress in Fort Worth, Texas, placed an ad looking for a babysitter for her toddler daughter. The babysitter picked up Melissa and never returned. Melissa's family had been looking for her ever since.
Then this past September, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received an anonymous tip of a possible sighting of Melissa. But it was Melissa's father using the DNA test 23andMe, which finally located her by finding some of her children. And just this past weekend, the family came together for the very first time.
They said, they had never stopped looking for Melissa and were amazed to learn that she was living within a half hour of them in Fort Worth the entire time. Melissa took a formal DNA test and results are expected this week, guys. But the family is sure that this is their missing daughter because of her birthday and because of a telltale birthmark.
In a statement on their Finding Melissa Facebook page, they wrote in part, "The joy is palpable amongst all family members. Thank you for all your support over the years."
