PROJECT DORM ROOM IS LENDING A HAND. >> WHEN YOU GO OUT TO COLLEGE, YOU HAVE YOUR PARENTS AND EVERYTHING TO HELP YOU MOVE IN. WHEN YOU ARE A PAST FOSTER YOUTH, YOUR FOSTER PARENTS AREN'T DOING THAT. YOU START TO FEEL ALONE. IT'S DEPRESSING. >> IT WAS OVERWHELMING WHEN I WAS MOVING INTO MY DORM. EVERYONE HAD ALL THESE CARTS OF BRAND-NEW STUFF. BEING A FORMER FOSTER YOUTH GOING TO UCLA IT WAS A BIG CULTURE SHOCK. I WAS CONSTANTLY STRESSED ABOUT HOW AM I GOING TO BUY BEDDING OR SCHOOL SUPPLIES. I HAD TO PICK ONE OR THE OTHER. >> READY TO SUCCEED WAS STARTED ALMOST SEVEN YEARS AGO. WE SAW A GLARING PROBLEM AND THAT WAS THAT THERE WERE THOUSANDS OF FOSTER YOUTH WHO MADE IT TO COLLEGE, WHICH WAS A HUGE FEAT, BUT THEY WERE DROPPING OUT AT ALARMING RATES. PROJECT DORM ROOM IS ONE OF OUR PROGRAMS. STUDENTS ARE RECEIVING SHEETS, TOWELS, COMFORTERS, EXTENSION CORDS, LAUNDRY DETERGENT. IT'S OVER $550 TO SET UP A DORM ROOM. WITHOUT SUPPORT, THEY WOULD BE ARRIVING WITH LITERALLY JUST THE CLOTHES ON THEIR BACK. >> IT LIFTED A BIG FINANCIAL BURDEN. I WAS ABLE AND BLESSED ENOUGH TO HAVE PROJECT DORM ROOM MY FULL THREE YEARS WHILE I WAS AT UCLA. >> PROJECT DORM ROOM SHOWS FORMER FOSTER YOUTH ALL THESE RESOURCES ARE OUT THERE. SO MANY OF US ARE HYPER INDEPENDENT AND PRIDE OURSELVES IN OUR INDEPENDENCE. >> IT ALWAYS MAKES ME SO EMOTIONAL BECAUSE THEY'RE SO DESERVING AND THEY WORKED SO HARD. THEY'VE JUST BEEN DEALT A BAD HAND. TO SEE THEM GO ON, IT'S ONE OF THE MOST SATISFYING THINGS I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED. >> I STUDY AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES.
