Transcript for Patrick Swayze's wife Lisa Niemi Swayze reflects on his life and legacy
LISA NIEMI SWAYZE: In 2009, I lost my husband, Patrick Swayze, to pancreatic cancer after a heartfelt, grueling, tough, determined fight for 22 months. He did not want to become the poster boy for cancer. He had so much in his life, and he had such a huge, full life and so many things that he did. But he had such a huge heart.
We were married for 34 years, and being together with someone for 34 years, you see just about everything, and you go through just about everything you could possibly imagine. I used to always, say particularly with the kind of roles that Patrick liked to play, he always like to be the hero. I always said, give him a sword, a cape, and a horse, and he's a happy man.
When it came to fighting is illness, this disease, you really saw he really was a hero. I saw the man I knew he always wanted to be, which was courageous, truly courageous, humble, loving, determined, strong. He had his moments. He did say, I'm the one with cancer, you know? And I said, well, this is happening to me, too. And it's true. It happens to the entire family.
I've learned to take the good with the bad. And you know, the bad parts are the price of having a wonderful, great love. And I'll take that any day of the week. And I'd do it all over again.
