Transcript for Taylor Swift fans pressure Ticketmaster to change practices
- Taylor Swift fans are gathering outside a Los Angeles courthouse ahead of a hearing on Ticketmaster. The so-called Swifties are suing the ticket giant saying Ticketmaster conspired to jack up prices for Swift's Eras Tour. Now they're calling for change. Mola Lenghi is live outside district court in Los Angeles with more on that. Mola, what's it like there right now? And what are the allegations in this case? - Well, Diane, Swifties essentially want a better fan experience. The gripe here fans say is that Ticketmaster intentionally misled them. They claim the company engaged in fraud and price fixing, that it is deceptive in its ticketing practices, that it hit customers with unjustified, sky high fees, that it knowingly sold tickets to scalpers who then resold those tickets on a secondary market for sky high prices, unreasonable and out of control prices, and that ultimately, these fans argue, that Ticketmaster is a monopoly taking advantage of customers, taking advantage of the marketplace, doing whatever it wants unchecked, unregulated, and lacking any meaningful sort of competition. These are the fans' complaints. Of course, all of this follows, like you mentioned, that really disastrous pre-sale ticket rollout back in November for Taylor Swift concert tickets. It was a miserable, frustrating experience for so many customers, so many fans, many of whom waited for hours on the Ticketmaster website, that website crashing during that process, prices and fees continuing to skyrocket. It was a maddening, confusing process for so many Taylor Swift fans. And in fact, it even prompted a congressional investigation and a congressional hearing. So again, fans claiming that the ticket giant is really operating unchecked and that they, the fans, are being taken advantage of, Diane. - So how is Ticketmaster responding to this, Mola? - Well, when it comes to the allegations of antitrust, monopoly, fraud, deceptive practices, you know, Ticketmaster certainly pushes back on that. But they have said that they needed to do better at least in the areas of the fan experience, you know, in particular, that website experience, rolling out those-- that pre-sale concert tickets, that miserable experience for fans back in November. They have said that they needed to do better at least in that regard, Diane. - All right. Mola Lenghi in Los Angeles, thank you.
